Operation Hot Mother

Lol, that’s for my Arrested Development fan readers. Everyone else will probably just think I’m weird. (And they wouldn’t be totally wrong.)

So, I mentioned in a previous post I’m doing the Outer Banks Half Marathon this year! I did it two years ago and had a blast, though training wasn’t easy. It’s tough work, but I think it’s so sadistically fun to see your body go farther than you ever thought it could. Before doing it, 13.1 miles seemed like a long distance to drive. It’s still far, and it’s not like training this time around will be any easier, but I know my body can do it.

Fitting in workouts has become a little more complicated since Margo’s come into the picture. I’m currently doing two 3 mile runs and one 2 mile run during the week, and 1 long run on the weekends (right now it’s 4). The distances of all of the aforementioned will increase over the 3 months of training. Right now it’s a little daunting to see a 10 mile run the week before the race, but I’ll get there. I’m also aiming to get two P90X strength workouts in per week. And I just figured out how to make it so I don’t have to listen to Tony the whole time so yay, that just got way less annoying! Today I did arms & shoulders while listening to npr, during Margo’s nap. And I know I’m like the only one who likes the P90X yoga dvd, but I hope to do it every weekend on the non-long run day, or maybe switch it up with another good yoga dvd if anyone has any recs!

So yeah, that’s a pretty exhausting week! Last week, the first official week of training, I was very tired by Friday (the day of rest). I ran with the stroller for two of the three runs during the week. It’s fun to have Margo with me, but so exciting to go for runs without her! I’ve also been trying to stay honest to the tips the nutritionist gave me. I’ve been much more mindful about protein. I got some of the Whey Protein Powder from Whole Foods, and tried it in chocolate milk. Um, bad idea. I will have to try to find other things to put it in… the protein shake feels like a lot of work right now! My new favorite healthy snack is grapes and Babybel cheese! Mmmm!

This post is a little ADD, but oh well 🙂 I’m enjoying my Hot Mother regimen so far, hopefully the energy level stays up!

This is me:

I’m pouty & grumpy because I’m forcing myself to take the weekend off from P90X. I’m not sure if I’ve blogged about it, but I’ve complained about it on my various social media outlets and in person, for those of you lucky enough to hear my whine in person ;).  My back is a mess, and not to “blame” anyone, but it’s totally due to pregnancy and subsequent demands of motherhood (nursing, holding a 16 lb 4 month old while trying to do housework, etc). I started seeing a Physical Therapist last month and was doing totally better on Tuesday… so good that she didn’t schedule another appt and released me. However, the day after, the other side of my back started with the stabbing pain and I had to quit my workout in the middle. I feel so crappy about it, I’m so motivated and really enjoying P90X and I hate feeling like I’m slacking and that the slacking would eventually lead to quitting. I WILL get back on, but I really need to jump off the intensity bandwagon for a few days and apply some heat and rest in hopes I can nurse myself back to health. I had a really good experience w/ the PT, however I would love to not have to sacrifice that time on my days off!

It’s funny though, it’s the same feeling I would get when I was swimming or playing field hockey when you get injured. Nothing renews your desire to play like an injury. And I spent the night last night being miserable and whiny (Sorry, Scott) and intend to play it cool for the rest of the weekend if at all possible. And hope to hit P90X with renewed intensity Monday. Err, I might skip Chest & Back, cause it sucked.

So far…

So, we started P90X last Sunday with an unofficial (as in, not part of the 90 days) warm up week. Um, whoa. It was hard, but it was also by far the most working out we’d done in several months, or years. We started our official 90 days on Monday. This program is not for pansies.

What can I say so far about P90X? Well, I love it. I really love having someone tell me what to do at this point in time (in the workout department only, thank you very much 😉 ) and doing it with Scott is way more fun than doing it alone would be. We have a good space in our bonus room for it and we now have all the equipment we need. And after we put Margo to bed at 7, we have a good chunk of free time to just do it, especially since summer TV is pretty lame (except for Bravo! 2 overlapping seasons of Real Housewives is beyond awesome. But that’s why we have DVR and weekends.) Where was I? Real Housewives always gets me off on a tangent. Oh yeah, we have a good timeslot in which to work out and shower, and each other to ensure no one decides to take an unauthorized day off. And I’m becoming reacquainted with the masochistic joy I get out of sore muscles.

We did take pictures, as per the program’s suggestion. And no, I won’t be sharing those, but I’m pretty psyched to see some changes in the next 90 days. And also psyched to button pants without sucking it in hardcore and sporting a severe muffintop. Okay, a tad dramatic, but I do have a lot of clothes it’ll be nice to wear again.
